The Hot Flash DietTM recipe for November is Mashed Turnips, a good substitute for mashed potatoes. They can be made ahead of time and refrigerated without a change in flavor like potatoes. Turnips (AKA rutabagas) keep in the back of the fridge for weeks, so I keep them there for when I am tired of the usual sides. Turnips have less starch and more fiber than potatoes, too. Overall, the thermal property of this dish is “neutral” according to Traditional Chinese Medicine.
1 pound of turnips, peeled & cut into slices
¼ to 1/3 cup milk or soy milk or other “milk”
1 to 2 TBSP olive oil/butter mix or butter
¼ to ½ tsp sea salt
Boil the turnip slices in salted water until they are fork tender. This will take 20 to 40 minutes depending on how small and thin your pieces are. Drain the water, add the milk, butter/oil, and salt and heat on low until warmed. Mash using a potato masher, handheld mixer, or immersion blender.
